GreenCity Project is a minority-owned and operated company, founded in March 2012 by lifelong Chicago residents from the Little Village neighborhood. Growing up in the city shaped our passion for sustainability and strengthened our commitment to making Chicago a better place to live. Our mission is simple: increase textile recycling, reduce landfill waste, and create economic opportunities for Chicago communities. Since our inception, we have diverted 78 million pounds of textiles from landfills. But that’s just a fraction of the 34 billion pounds of clothing that end up in U.S. landfills each year. Currently, only 15% of discarded textiles are recycled or reused, meaning over 32 billion pounds still go to waste annually. GreenCity Project aims to change that by expanding accessibility to textile recycling and reducing reliance on new raw materials—while bringing economic benefits to Chicago neighborhoods.
